Blankets for Charity

February 27th, 2007

I’ve been thinking about doing this for a long time, but just haven’t been able to think of a good name for it.  So I am asking for ideas, and if you would be interested in doing something like this.

This is a cross between charity knitting and a swap.  Basically how it works is I will knit a square, then I’ll send it to the next person, and they will attach another square.  When I send the blanket, I’ll also send a little something special along, maybe some chocolate, coffee, or a skein of yarn.  Nothing huge, but something fun.

In the end we’ll have a fabulous blanket for a charity of our choice, goodies, and no seaming!  Plus I love the idea that the blanket will have traveled.  If we get enough people together we can get two blankets going.

What do you think?  Have a good name for it?  Want to participate?

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Charity? (Or maybe “Fellowship of the Traveling Charity”, to avoid accusations of sexism.) Dr. Goodfiber’s 100% Goodtime Traveling Charity Show? The Magic Carpet Ride?

I’m in. The only names I came up with are :

    The Blankety-Blank Blanket
    or
    Knit Blanket Bingo

To make it easier on the participants you might want to go log-cabin style for the blanket construction (possibly tell all participants that they should invest/ dig in their stash for a certain weight yarn, too). But, I love the idea and would LOVE to participate. It also might make coming up with a name easier to pick a charity in advance.

I think it’s a great idea…But it wouldn’t have to travel much to get to me. Sara’s got some good points too.

I think that even I could find a time to knit a square.

I think it’s a GREAT idea. How about if each includes a pic, too, so the recipients will know who worked on it???? I did live in NM, Jodie. I was born in Alamogordo and basically lived there until 11 when we moved to Texas. (We moved for a little over 6 months to Hawaii when I was 3). I love NM. I would move there now if there was enough work for me.!!!!
